We are taught that the BoM must have really happened (and THAT means it's "True"), or it never happened (and that means it's "false"). In reality, we are never taught to look at religion in a mature manner. I'm looking at you, polygamy and priesthood ban!) In some ways it's better than some other churches, and in other ways it's worse. I believe the church is just like any other church. The evidence makes it clear the church is not what it claims to be (i.e., God's one True church, priesthood authority, historicity of BoM, true prophet, etc.). I think there's a TON of dirty "bath water." But I truly feel there is a valuable "baby" in that tub, too. I don't believe the church is for everyone. ![]() I'm not hear to be an apologist (although I did choose that flair). Unfortunately, the church's own teachings are causing some of the most faithful to throw the baby out with the bath water. So where does that leave us? Those of us who see the cracks in the foundation use our false dichotomy of "It's-either-True-or-false" and make a sweeping conclusion that it's false. And, of course, the conclusion the church wants everyone to draw is that it is, in fact, True. The church must claim that it is either True or false. Why? Because moral relativism reduces the church's power and authority. The church ardently fights moral relativism. The universe is so much bigger than "It's either this or that." In fact, what is true for one person may be totally false for another. Hinckley taught us, "It is either right or wrong, true or false, fraudulent or true." This is what was fed to us repeatedly throughout our lives.Įxcept this is BS. For those of us raised in Mormondom, we are taught from birth "There is a right and a wrong to every question" (Choose the Right).
